Bringing BIPOC Stories to Life
I believe words have the power to shape the world. In fact, I have “The Truths is Mightier Than the Sword” tattooed on my wrist. Books have the insane ability to transcend boundaries, connect diverse voices, and foster empathy. In this landscape, the voices of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) authors are essential, especially as they try to silence us and erase the history that has taken us so long to unearth.
It wasn’t until 2024 that I found my voice. I learned to appreciate those little ticks and nuances that make me, well, me. To put it bluntly, I learned to love myself better than anyone else can or ever will. I didn’t arrive here by happenstance. My process took years of introspection, Post-It notes on the mirror, therapy, and hard work to live my truth. In this authenticity, when I and other BIPOC authors share our stories, we offer readers an opportunity to view the world through different lenses. My deepest hope is that my readers come away with a deeper understanding and appreciation our culture and the written word.
It’s time for me and other authors to challenge mainstream media that aims to perpetuate stereotypes and offer one-dimensional portrayals of babies, mamas, deadbeat dads, addiction, and the justice system. We are multifaceted and complex. Our stories reflect the richness, boldness, splendor, pain, and joys of living while BIPOC. We each bring a different narrative to the playing field. Hear our voices. Silence is not an option.
Representation matters. (Hear that, Walmart!) I hope that by sharing my journey, I’ll validate others' identities, instill pride, and inspire others to pursue their own creative endeavors.
